Lehigh Wheelmen Association, Inc. Bicycle Touring & Racing |
We are a bicycling club! As of January 2004, we are a merger of the Lehigh Wheelmen Association (LWA) and the Future Champions Cycling Club (FCCC). Our name says 'Wheelmen', which is an old name for a bicycling association, but we are really 'Wheelpeople' - about 600 women and men of all ages. The LWA was established in 1951 and has since been the Lehigh Valley's largest cycling organization, with a program of recreational riding and racing. FCCC, founded in 1984 has been instrumental in providing support to juniors involved in competitive road and track cycling. The new junior group will race under the name of Bike Line Future Champions, as Bike Line sponsors the LWA racing team. Our activities are centered in, but not limited to, the Lehigh Valley of Eastern Pennsylvania. We offer a full schedule of road and off-road rides, and our racing team hosts several criteriums and training races for licensed (USCF) riders, as well as a club championship and monthly time trials that are open to all members. In addition to our traditional schedule of races, the Lehigh Wheelmen will be host to the Tour de FCCC, a junior stage race for cyclists ages 10 through 18. The Tour de FCCC, begun in 1994, attracts cyclists from the tri-state area as well as teams from as far away as Bermuda. The 'Tour' consists of a road race and time trial at the Pagoda in Reading, PA, followed by a criterium at the Rodale Cycling and Fitness Park in Trexlertown, PA. We have monthly meetings that often feature a guest speaker. Some of our events are open to the public. These include, but are not limited to our fall Gap Gallop Century (100-mile ride), the spring Valley Veloce, and our new fun race, the Donut Derby. Our events for members and guests include a Metric Century (32-mile ride) followed by the club picnic in August, a December End-of-Year Party, and other picnic/party events. Membership: Annual club membership runs from April 1 to March 31. See our Membership Application for details of annual dues, and our Events page for details of our activities. Links to both pages are found on the home page. Members get our monthly newsletter "The Quick Release" which is available on-line. In addition, a printed copy delivered by US Mail is available for a fee (payable with the dues). The Lehigh Wheelmen Association (LWA) is affiliated with the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) (formerly the League of American Wheelmen (LAW) ), and our racing team is affiliated with the USCF. Other than its affiliation with the LAB, the Lehigh Wheelmen Association is an independent organization and has no connection with any other local institution or organization that might have the word 'Lehigh' as part of its name. |
